When you hear the term “real hardwood floors” you are most likely to think about real solid hardwood first. While there are good reasons for that thinking, we want you to know that it’s not your only option. At Style Flooring, we offer both solid hardwood as well as engineered hardwood. They both have pros and cons associated but it’s likely that one is better for you than the other. Let’s take a look at the differences…
Solid Hardwood Flooring
Everyone loves solid hardwood floors. As a matter of fact, the look is so popular than many other types of flooring mimic it. With solid hardwood, you get exactly that… a plank of flooring that is made of 100%, solid hardwood. There are many various types of hardwood from which to choose and each has its own look, color, and benefits.
PRO – Hardwood can be refinished several times during its lifespan. If it becomes scratched, dented or scuffed, refinishing it will bring it back to life! After a good refinishing, it will look as though you have a brand new floor.
CON – Hardwood tends to be greatly affected by humidity and temperature changes. It cannot be used in basement areas.
Engineered Hardwood Flooring
Engineered hardwood is made by placing a real hardwood top layer of between 1 and 6 mils thick on top of multiple layer of cross grained birch plywood. Engineered hardwoods are more dimensionally stable and can be installed in basements while solid hardwood cannot.
PRO – Engineered hardwood floors are more cost effective. These floors can offer longer and wider planks that would be cost prohibitive in a solid hardwood.
CON – A good quality engineered hardwood will have a similar wear layer to that of a solid hardwood floor but cheaper options will have much less of a wear layer.
