If you are remodeling your home, you know how exciting but stressful it can be. You can have your mind set on which look you want to achieve, but making final decisions on paint colors, countertops, and flooring can be quite overwhelming. Replacing your carpet can be a challenging process so it’s best to hire professionals who can help.

Out With the Old

We strongly believe you should only have a professional carpet remover and installer for your carpet, but if you try to do it yourself you will need: pliers, gloves, dust mask, carpet blade, mini crowbar, hammer, shop vacuumed, measuring tape, knee pads (if desired), a bunch of patience and experience with carpet. All furniture and any heavy wall hangings must be moved prior to removing the carpet. You should also consider removing doors that swing into the room to make the process easier. Wearing a mask and gloves for protection, use pliers to pull back the carpet at a corner. Use a measuring tape to divide the carpet into 4 foot strips and the carpet blade to cut off these portions, which makes cleanup easier. You will do this throughout the entire room. After the carpet has been removed, you will remove the underlay. If it is still in good shape and free of moisture or pet damage, you might be able to salvage this and use it for the new carpet. If you aren’t able to keep it, it’s not too difficult to remove. Just continue to pull back on it until you pull it all up. The most challenging part is removing the staples which you can use the pliers to do. If any task strips are rusted or rotted, use the mini crow bar to pry them up and replace them. If they’re in good condition, you can use them for the new carpet.

In With the New

Removing carpet is usually easier than installing it. Once all the old carpet has been removed, you’ll be ready for the new. It is important that carpet installation is done neatly and correctly as this is the best way to prevent rippling. There are a few things to take into consideration when it comes time to choose new carpet.

  • How often is the room used?
  • How much light shines into the room?
  • Does it receive a lot of traffic?
  • Is the room for entertainment or relaxation?
  • Does the room have direct access to outside?

Answering these questions will help give you a good idea of which style and type of carpet to use throughout your home.

As mentioned before, carpet replacement is not easy task. You can trust the professionals Style Flooring, Cabinets, and Carpets to tackle the job and make your home remodeling process easy so you can just enjoy the exciting parts!
